The Hope Home Calcutta is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (N.G.O.) based in Calcutta, India (with tax-exemption status under section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961) that desires to demonstrate God’s love by alleviating suffering and need particularly of children, here in Calcutta and throughout our country of India. Calcutta (now known as Kolkata), is a city of 16 million, with 43% living in the slums. There are thousands of children who live on the streets of this 300 year old city in utter poverty and helplessness. Many of these children come to the city with their parents looking for non-existent opportunities of livelihood; many other are abandoned by their parents who cannot afford to feed or raise them. Thousands of them are children of prostitutes who become part of the ‘system’ before they are 7 years old and grow up in its filth, dirt and disgust. There are still others who are kidnapped or lured from rural areas by well organized mafia gangs who force them to beg on the streets or train them to commit petty crimes. Often these children are physically abused and tortured by their mafia bosses; some are even maimed with their limbs amputated to gain maximum ‘sympathy’. Over 100,000 children live on the streets in this city. Hope Home Calcutta is an initiative to address this pressing need and reality of our city. We realized that these children, out of compulsion, were enduring for a lifetime what most of us would not bear for a day, being deprived of the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, protection, education, love and security. Hope Home Calcutta seeks to demonstrate God’s love by alleviating human suffering primarily in this city and other cities of our country, bringing hope for a bright future to these children by providing them a safe home of refuge where they will receive physical, emotional and spiritual strengthening in an atmosphere of love and acceptance.
